ODENSE – FAIRYTALE TOWN

The Ugly Duckling, The Snow Queen -many of our childhood’s favourite fairytales were penned by Hans Christian Andersen.
Born in 1805, the son of a cobbler and a laundry woman, Hans Christian Andersen left his hometown Odense at the tender age of 14 and returned as a world-famous writer of fairytales.

The small yellow townhouse where he was born is now the Hans Christian Andersen Museum.

The narrow medieval alleys, courtyards and cobbled squares were popular places to be today as people made their way to the Christmas Market.

During the Summer Season (not today at 7 degrees) the Andersen Parade brings characters to life.

Our day started well as we experienced an Inter City Express from Copenhagen to Odense. With our First Class Eurail pass we had access to tea and coffee facilities, free bottled water and a plate with grainy bread roll, butter, jam and cheese.

This, of course, was all unexpected. We had already purchased our most expensive cup of coffee – $9!!! (That is AUD) You can be sure that I drained every last drop. By the way, we packed our rolls for a later meal.

The many islands that make up Denmark ensure that one doesn’t travel far without passing over huge long bridges. Our journey today took us through an 8 km. long tunnel which is 70 metres below S.L. to Odense on the Island of Funen. It is the largest construction project in Danish History.
